Big Bang: The Origin of the Universe

Singh (author of Fermat's Enigma) recounts the historical development of the theory and explains concepts and their significance in an extraordinarily friendly manner for general readers. His clear an...d engaging writing offers non-scientists an opportunity to experience some of the excitement of this intellectual achievement. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR The Washington Post - Dennis Drabelle Above all, Singh keeps track of the human stories behind the evolution of an idea. … Like Singh himself, Gamow could both do the science and make it comprehensible to lay readers, becoming famous for his fantasy Mr. Tompkins in Hollywood, "in which the speed of light was just a few kilometres per hour, so that a bicycle ride would reveal the weird effects of relativity. . . ."

Cartoon History of the Universe I, Vol. 1-7: From the Big Bang to Alexander the Great

An entertaining and informative illustrated guide  that makes world history accessible, appealing,  and funny. Publishers Weekly Gonick's hilariously informative history of the pla...net is a great addition to the growing field of comics trade books. Starting with the Big Bang theory and moving on to the ``evolution of everything,'' he manages to cover three billion years--from the origins of cellular life to the fossil and dinosaur periods that followed, right up to the first appearance of hominids--all with casual erudition, silly humor and delightfully cartoony black-and-white drawings. But Gonick doesn't stop there. He reinstates the record of women (their theoretical role in the development of agriculture and the matrilineal clans of the neolithic era) as well as accurately restoring black racial characteristics to the Egyptian dynasties. He also surveys other highly evolved ancient civilizations: the Sumerians, the Hittites, the Assyrians and the Israelites. Gonick cheerfully conjures rulers, warriors and slaves alike, many stumbling around in the desert, as they form the foundations for Western civilization. This is Gonick's first book. (Sept.)

The Physics Book: From the Big Bang to Quantum Resurrection, 250 Milestones in the History of Physics

Following the hugely successful The Science Book and The Math Book comes a richly illustrated chronology of physics, containing 250 short, entertaining, and thought-provoking entries. In addition... to exploring such engaging topics as dark energy, parallel universes, the Doppler effect, the God particle, and Maxwell's demon, the book's timeline extends back billions of years to the hypothetical Big Bang and forward trillions of years to a time of “quantum resurrection.” Like the previous titles in this series, The Physics Book helps readers gain an understanding of major concepts without getting bogged down in complex details.

Genesis and the Big Bang Theory: The Discovery Of Harmony Between Modern Science And The Bible

In this groundbreaking book, physicist Gerald Schroeder takes on skeptics from both sides of the cosmological debate, arguing that science and the Bible are not at odds ... Library Journal Credit the ...author, who has equal credentials in physics and theology, with uniquely addressing ultimate origins (the Big Bang) and not just human origins (evolution). Still, his insistence on the literal correctness of Scripture (there's even a little bit of ``counting the begats'') establishes a tone that won't work with many readers. A more theologically sophisticated exposition is Evolution and Creation, edited by Ernan McMullin (Notre Dame Pr. 1985), and George Seielstad's At the Heart of the Web ( LJ 6/1/89) elucidates many of the same themes without invoking divine creation. However, with its thoughtful references encompasing Maimonides to Stephen Jay Gould, Schroeder's book deserves discussion and could become a standard text of ``creation science.'' It is also likely to receive mixed reviews from scientists, a controversy that probably warrants its purchase.-- Gregg Sapp, Montana State Univ. Libs., Bozeman
